It's quite a challenge for US films to gain an international audience, though some might argue it's even harder for international filmmakers to gain a US audience. One of the filmmakers to do so is the legendary Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou, known primarily for his wuxia films Hero, House of Flying Daggers, and most recently Shadow. However, Yimou has shown his versatility over the years in other genres and continues to do so with his upcoming historical spy thriller Cliff Walkers which has just been given a simultaneous release date of April 30th for both US and Chinese theaters.
Set in the 1930's, the story follows four Communist party special agents who return to China's snowy northeast (Known then as the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo) after receiving special training in the Soviet Union. Immediately following their parachuting entrance, they find themselves sold out by a traitor and find their lives on the line.
