While Taika Waititi is known primarily as a writer and director, but he also likes to dabble in front of the camera as an actor. Now, he'll test his multiple talents as he joins the HBO Max series Our Flag Means Death (Played by Rhys Darby who previously worked with Waiti on What We Do in the Shadows and the HBO series Flight of the Conchords). Waititi was already signed as a director and producer on the project before this announcement. On-screen, he will take on the role of Blackbeard. Series creator David Jenkins had this to say on the character and the casting of Waititi:
"Our Blackbeard is a legend, a lover, a fighter, a tactical genius, a poetic soul, and quite possibly insane. Only one man could play this role, and that is the great Taika Waititi. We’re thrilled beyond measure he’s decided to don the beard.”
The show was ordered to series back in September 2020, but production is expected to finally commence later this year with an expectant 2022 premiere date on HBO Max. Stay tuned!
