While usually these kind of films would have come and gone as award season qualifications usually end in December, the pandemic has led to the extended award season. To the point the Oscars won't air until early April. True Mothers, Japan's official Oscar entry for this year, is one that is lucky to have that extension. Check out the official poster for it below:
The movie is a very simple character story, but offers a slew of emotional directions. Focusing on a married couple who adopt a young girl's unborn child, things get a little complicated when the birth mother comes back years later and wants her kid back. As the official trailer reveals below, a heart-wrenching tale ensues:
For any audience member outside of Japan, True Mothers will be available on Film Movement’s Virtual Cinema on January 29. It will be part of a special screening package with other International Oscar-contending films this year including Blizzard of Souls, My Little Sister, and You Will Die at Twenty. This package is currently priced at $30 for a limited time. A great deal indeed for cinephiles!
True Mothers stars Hiromi Nagasaku, Arata Iura, and Aju Makita. It is directed by Naomi Kawase.
