Operation Mincement
While it will be released internationally in theaters by Warner Bros. International (on January 7th, 2020), the upcoming war drama Operation Mincemeat has yet to get a theatrical release in the US though Netflix has picked it up for distribution so it will ultimately land there. Shame given the wild true story being depicted in the film.
The basic operation saw two members of British intelligence obtain the body of Glyndwr Michael, a tramp who died from eating rat poison, so as to dress him as a fictitious officer of the Royal Marines. Correspondence between two British generals that suggested that the Allies planned to invade Greece and Sardinia (with Sicily as merely the target of a feint), was also placed on the body. This allowed the Allies to get the jump on Germans who thought they were getting a jump on the Allies. The most definite result of the operation's success was Sicily was liberated from Germany more quickly than anticipated and losses were lower than predicted. The operation was noted for being partially the work of Ian Fleming who, before writing the James Bond character, was a Lieutenant Commander in WWII. He conceived the plan with his superior Rear Admiral John Godfrey, the Director of the Naval Intelligence Division in the 1939 Trout memo, all as part of the wider Operation Barclay.
The film will see actor Colin Firth take on the role of Ewen Montagu, one of the two intelligence officers who put the operation into planning while Matthew Macfadyen will play the other officer, Charles Cholmondeley. The film is directed by John Madden. Check out the official trailer below:
Hypnotic
As for one of Netflix's original films that they themselves produced, the official trailer for Hypnotic has been released today. Starring Kate Siegel (known for her collaborations with her husband, Mike Flanagan), the story follows a young woman seeking self-improvement by enlisting the help of a renowned hypnotherapist. However, intense sessions with the hypnotherapist leads to unexpected and deadly consequences.
The film is co-directed by Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote. It will be released on Netflix on October 27th. Check out the official trailer below:
Red Rocket
The only trailer for a non-Netflix distributed film in this article is that of Red Rocket, which is another acclaimed film from indie production company A24. The film sees Simon Rex star as Mikey Saber, a washed-up porn star who returns to his small Texas hometown...even though no one there really wants him back. The film is directed by Sean Baker (who co-wrote the script with Chris Bergoch).
Both Baker and Bergoch were last seen working on the acclaimed 2017 film The Florida Project and the new trailer demonstrates another hard-hitting take about struggle and bad choices:
Stay tuned!
All 3 look pretty horrible. Jesus. This is what it's come to?
