While George Miller is currently working on the Furiosa spin-off to his beloved Mad Max series, that didn't stop the sometimes eclectic director from switching up and telling a dark fantasy tale about a Djinn who offers three wishes to reserved scholar Alithea Binnie in exchange for his freedom. Titled Three Thousand Years of Longing, and based on the short story The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye by A. S. Byatt, the story begins as a conversation between the two principal leads in a hotel room in Istanbul before leading to consequences neither would have expected.
With Idris Elba playing the Djinn and Tilda Swinton taking on the role of Binnie, the result seems potentially ambitious, a comment shared by early critics when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival early this year though reviews have been otherwise very lax. That being said, Miller has gained a reputation for creating films with passion and thus should at least have his newest film given a chance.
