With production continuing on for the Avatar sequels in New Zealand, the franchise's Twitter page has decided to release two set photos focusing on co-star Sigourney Weaver. Despite her character Dr. Grace Augustine dying in the original 2009 film, her character died and was absorbed into the ecosystem of the planet Pandora, the prime setting of the series. This means, somehow, Weaver is returning for the sequels in a new role which director James Cameron has only mysteriously teased as “she’s playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films.” Check out the set photos below:
Based off these photos, a couple things can be deduced about her new character. Based on the motion-capture suit, she'll be a computer-generated character and will be featured in the sequel's teased underwater scenes. The first set photo indicates she will be riding what will potentilaly become some sort of undersea creature. On a side note, second shot shows the floating ping pong style balls on the surface of the water of the 900,000 gallon tank built specifically for the sequels. The balls' function is to stop light spillage into the water which can interfere with the motion capture elements. One of Cameron's earliest teases for the immediate sequel was that it would heavily feature the ocean of Pandora. As more is released, that seems to be the primary setting this time around.
Avatar 2 co-stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Michelle Yeoh, Vin Diesel, Jemaine Clement, Oona Chaplin, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, Stephen Lang, and Matt Gerald. It is set to hit theaters December 17th, 2021.
