Filmmakers stick around by having a certain quality to offer that other filmmakers don't. For Robert Eggers, it's doing projects that are so deeply researched, they allow for visceral experiences in whatever historical time period he uses as backdrop to his horror-infused tales . Following up his critically acclaimed films The Witch and The Lighthouse, Eggers has officially begun production of his next film, the viking revenge film, The Northman, for which he also co-wrote the script for alongside Icelandic novelist Sjon.
Originally slated to start in March, but delayed due to the ongoing pandemic, the film is being shot in Ireland but the film is set in Iceland at the turn of the 10th century. Eggers is bringing back two actors from his previous films, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) and Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse), alongside an impressive ensemble that includes Nicole Kidman, Alexander Skarsgard, Bill Skarsgard, Claes Bang, and Kate Dickie. In addition, it's been confirmed that Icelandic singer-songwriter Björk has joined the cast as a character called "The Slav Witch".
No doubt, like Eggers' other films, The Northman will be an experience unlike any other. Stay tuned!
