Ethan Hawke may be a dramatic actor known for such films as the Before films and First Reformed in recent years or his directorial efforts like the acclaimed biopic Blaze, but he's also had a surprising successful streak of sci-fi projects. His films Daybreakers (2009) and Predestination (2014) are considered underrated gems in the genre. Hawke's range is an attribute to his risk-taking as an artist which is why Zeros and Ones, which had its world premiere at the 74th Locarno Film Festival in August 2021 to critical acclaim, is an ever-intriguing addition to his filmography.
The film also benefits by being written and directed by veteran filmmaker Abel Ferrera who has dipped into every genre with grace and narrative tension from the crime drama Bad Lieutenant (1992) to the apocalyptic sci-fi drama 4:44 Last Day on Earth (2011) to his recent psychological thriller Siberia (2020). The synopsis shows he's ready to dive head-first into an odd concept with utter commitment:
An American soldier (Played by Hawke) stationed in Rome with the Vatican blown up, embarks on a hero's journey to uncover and defend against an unknown enemy threatening the entire world.
The official trailer has been released today ahead of the film's limited theatrical release on November 19th. Check it out below:
Zeros and Ones co-stars Cristina Chiriac, Phil Neilson, Valerio Mastandrea, Dounia Sichov, Korlan Madi, Mahmut Sifa Erkaya, and Anna Ferrara.
