30 years ago, director Nicolas Roeg's The Witches hit theaters and has become an instant classic. Based on the Roald Dahl novel of the same name, the tale was one that saw a young boy who faces a coven of witches and is transformed in a mouse. Now her and her grandmother must stop them from enacting an evil plan of turning all children into mice. Like so many other classics, this film is getting the remake treatment, this time with Robert Zemeckis at the helm and starring Anne Hathaway as the Grand High Witch. Updating the story to 1960's, the story will be mostly the same, but with Zemeckis at the helm (And having co-written the script with Guillermo del Toro and Kenya Barris), the trailer shows it might not be the worst retelling. Check it out below:
It was also confirmed today that the film would be skipping theaters and going straight to HBO Max, most likely to avoid the questionable status of theaters during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The new official poster also confirmed this:
The Witches co-stars Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci, Chris Rock, and Jahzir Kadeem Bruno. It will be available to stream on HBO Max in the United States on October 22, 2020.
