Continuing the dark comedic tone he established in his script for Yorgos Lanthimos' 2018 film The Favourite, Tony McNamara's Hulu show The Great was well-received in its first season, to the point of being recognized at last year’s Primetime Emmys for Outstanding Directing of a Comedy Series (Matt Shakman) as well as an Outstanding Writing win for McNamara as well. Now, the creator, writer, and executive producer is poised to deliver another wild season that will premiere on Hulu on Friday, November 19th.
Season 2 will see Elle Fanning returning as a young Catherine the Great, now ascending to the throne alongside Nicholas Hoult’s bumbling take on Emperor Peter. Oh and a baby in tow! In addition, Gillian Anderson will join the cast as Joanna, Catherine’s mother. As Catherine further expands her power, she will have to contend with her own nation's issue with the change she hopes to bring. Check out the trailer below:
