During the 1980's and 1990's, Val Kilmer was one of the most sought out actors, though he also gained a reputation of being very difficult to work with, culminating in his contribution to the difficulties on set of the infamous Island of Dr. Moreau adaptation. And then, sadly, Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer sometime around 2015, leading to years of recovery. While he has been cancer-free since 2017, due to the chemotherapy and two tracheotomies, Kilmer's voice has been "reduced to a rasp" (as Kilmer himself confirmed last year) and he has to eat with a tube due to struggling to chew. Why am I telling you all this? Because despite these difficulties, Kilmer has been working to perform still despite his difficulties and as such is actually serving as a central figure in the upcoming movie The Birthday Cake that assembles a surprising range of actors.
The story follows a young Italian man named Giovanni (Played by Shiloh Fernandez) who is reluctantly continuing his family tradition of bringing a cake to his Uncle's house to celebrate the 10th anniversary of his father's passing. It's not long, however, before he witnesses a murder along the way that will force him to learn the truth behind his father's death and change his life forever. The film will see the likes of veteran actors such as Ewan McGregor and Lorraine Bracco work alongside Kilmer as well as younger talent such as Ashley Benson and David Mazouz, all of whom seem to serve as a voice for Kilmer's silent character. The Birthday Cake is the feature directorial debut of Jimmy Giannopoulos (who co-wrote the script with Fernandez and Diomedes Raul Bermudez). The film will be released in theaters and On Demand on June 10th.
