After years of trying to fit the mold of other actors, Ryan Reynolds has seemed to find his niche in Hollywood. Essentially, an actor who picks roles that are self-aware of the pop culture world that we are so entrenched in from day-to-day. While his new holiday film Spirited, a modern retelling of Charles Dickens' classic novella A Christmas Carol, will not see him donning the Deadpool costume, it does see him star as the equally cynical, Scrooge-like lead Clint Briggs.
Unlike previous iterations that saw Scrooge dragged along for a Christmas Eve journey of reformation, Briggs will turn the tables on his ghostly host until Present (Will Ferrell) finds himself reexamining his own past, present and future. For the first time, A Christmas Carol is told from the perspective of the ghosts and this modern, musical comedy will attempt to add new layers to a story that has been told and adapted countless times. If anything, as the official trailer shows, you'll get exactly what you hope for from a Reynolds (and Ferrell) film...calamity. Check it out below:
Spirited co-stars Octavia Spencer. It is directed by Sean Anders (who co-wrote the film with John Morris) and is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on November18th.
