Following up his highly successful 2016 film Elle, director Paul Verhoeven returns with his newest film, the biopic Benedetta. The film's post-production had been delayed first by Verhoeven recovering from surgery and then by the COVID-19 pandemic, but finally it's set to premiere at Cannes this year on July 9th.
The story, which Verhoeven co-wrote alongside David Birke, sees Virginie Efira starring as real historical figure Benedetta Carlini, a novice nun in the 17th century who joined an Italian convent and began a love affair with another woman, ultimately being imprisoned for nearly 40 years despite initially being considered a visionary for the church.
Today, the official trailer has been released. Check it out below:
Stay tuned!
Verhoeven is the best right now with Cronenberg IMHO.
