Following his two first efforts (Hereditary & Midsommar) having an emphasis on horror, filmmaker Ari Aster will go against his style for a surrealist comedy horror that will feature the always reliable Joaquin Phoenix in Beau Is Afraid. Though the film has been anything but transparent about what it's about, having been described as a “decades-spanning surrealist horror film set in an alternate present." The new trailer released today only helps a little in explaining though presents an intriguing tale nonetheless.
Phoenix plays the titular character of Beau, an extremely anxious but pleasant-looking man who has a fraught relationship with his overbearing mother and never knew his father. However, when his mother dies, he makes a journey home that involves some wild supernatural threats, one that apparently will see Phoenix play his character at multiple ages (with Armen Nahapetian playing him as a young boy). If anything, the trailer shows that Phoenix is once again all-in to deliver a powerhouse central performance to a twisted and off-beat humorous tale of his character's life. Check it out below:
Beau Is Afraid co-stars Nathan Lane, Patti LuPone, Amy Ryan, Kylie Rogers, Parker Posey, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Hayley Squires, Michael Gandolfini, Zoe Lister-Jones, and Richard Kind. It is set to be released in theaters on April 21st.
