Awhile back, Emma Stone was announced to be reteaming with Yorgos Lanthimos (who previously directed her in The Favourite) for Poor Things. Based on the book of the same name by Alasdair Gray, the story is a re-imagining of Mary Shelley’s classic story, Frankenstein but with a twist. For this take, Stone plays the monster who, unlike the original where the monster was a horrifically disfigured man, is a beautiful, volatile erotomaniac named Bella Baxter. Following a sucidal drowing (to escape an abusive husband, Archibald McCandless), she is revived from a suicidal drowning (to escape an abusive husband) with the mental faculties of a child. Things get far stranger from there. While Willem Dafoe has also previously been cast, it was not announced what role he could play. And now another is added with Mark Ruffalo announced today to join the cast.
Neither Dafoe or Ruffalo have had their parts confirmed though it's presumed one of them will play the role of Bella's abusive husband, Archibald. For now, all else that is confirmed is that Tony McNamara, who previously wrote The Favourite, will adapt the novel while Stone will produce with Ali Herting, Dave McCary, Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe. Filming will begin later this year. Stay tuned!
