Following the Emmy Awards last night, president of HBO, Casey Bloys, spoke with Deadline and in the middle of it confirmed that the Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon will be releasing in 2022.
The series is inspired by George RR Martin's 2018 novel Fire & Blood and will tell the history of House Targaryen, spanning many years and many monarchs, although it's not clear if the series will have such an expansive timeline or focus in on a specific time period. The original series took place after the civil war that brought down the Targaryen dynasty in Westeros and it had been confirmed that the Targaryen's had established centuries of rule as the conquering House of the Dragon by using the beasts as weapons of war.
House of the Dragon is set to have a 10-episode first season with Ryan J. Condal serving as showrunner. Condal had previously served as co-creator of the three-season series Colony alongside Carlton Cuse. In addition, the pilot for the prequel GOT series is set to be directed by Miguel Sapochnik who previously directed several episodes of the original series. Stay tuned!
