It's a wonder what the upcoming prequel to Roald Dahl’s classic novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory can add to the already quite-defined character. Between the book, the book's sequel (The Glass Elevator), and the two separate movies starring Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp, the idea of a prequel feels redundant. Yet, the film has attracted the attention of director Paul King along with his Paddington 2 co-writer Simon Farna (who co-wrote this film with King as well) along with Oscar-nominated actor Timothee Chalamet (Dune, Call Me By Your Name) starring in the lead role of a young Willy Wonka before he created his chocolate factory.
The film has already begun production, kicking off filming last month in the United Kingdom. and now Chalamet himself has posted the first official image of his version of the character, which seemingly blends the style of both Wilder's more classic version and Depp's more visually eccentric take along with what feels like a Dickensian vibe. The costume was designed by Liny Hemming, known for her work on big budget superhero projects such as The Dark Knight and Wonder Woman. Check it out below:
Wonka co-stars Keegan-Michael Key, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Olivia Colman and Jim Carter. It is set to land in theaters on March 17th, 2023.
