A lot of films lately have dealt with the shrinking working class in America. Best Picture winner Nomadland jump-off point in it's plot is the lead character's hometown dying before she decides to go out onto the road and live as a nomad. The upcoming film Holler actually looks to show a story of those who can't just leave, but want to. Specifically, it focuses on a young girl in a dying town in Southern Ohio who dreams of a better future but must struggle to even make it to tomorrow.
The story focuses on the character Ruth Avery (Played by Jessica Barden), a determined young woman finds a ticket out when she is accepted to college. To pay her way, her and her older brother, Ruth Avery join a dangerous scrap metal crew, working in scrap yards in the midst of a brutal winter. Together, they are forced to steal valuable metal from the once thriving factories by night. Despite these goals, Ruth will find herself torn between her own future and that of the family she will leave behind.
The first official clip released for the film, titled "Modern Day Gold Mines" takes a moment to delve into those day-by-day struggles Ruth endures in her quest for the American Dream. Check it out below:
Holler co-stars Becky Ann Baker, Pamela Adlon, Gus Harper, and Austin Amelio. It is written Nicole Riegel who also makes her directorial debut with this film. It is set to be released in theaters on June 11th.
