Based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Sarah Perry, the upcoming Apple TV+ series The Essex Serpent sees actress Claire Danes in her first starring TV role since her eight-season show Homeland ended in 2020. She takes over from Kiera Knightley who was originally set to star but who chose to leave the project for "family reasons". Still, the role offers Danes another complex character who charges into a settled world and shakes things up.
Here, she goes from a bipolar CIA agent to playing London widow Cora Seaborne who moves to Essex to investigate reports of a mythical serpent. There, she forms a bond of science and skepticism with the pastor, Will Ransome (Tom Hiddleston). However, when tragedy strikes, locals accuse her of attracting the creature.
Set to consist of six episodes, the show's first two episodes will premiere on Apple TV+ on Friday, May 13th with every episode after premiering weekly the same day of the week. Check out the official trailer for the show below:
The Essex Serpent is written by Anna Symon with all episodes helmed by film director Clio Barnard, known for films such as 2017's Dark River.
